Today (3/9/03) on the Dublin Life show on News Talk 106 FM, after the 3pm
news, Martin will be reviewing Aldi's wines. There're cheap but plenty of people ask
me if they are any good.
I have to say that given the very
competitive pricing they have a very high hit hit rate.
They held a tasting of 30 of their wines
in Dublin yesterday to highlight new lines and new vintages of some wines
and there was plenty to get excited about. If you are looking for a party
wine then Enoteca Italina Gambellara, €4.99,
84/100, a sort of Soave in sheep's clothing would be a very
acceptable party wine and what else can you buy for that kind of money? My
best value red of the tasting was their Chateau
Selection Claret, €5.99, 86/100 made for them by Patrice
Calvet, no that's not the negociant firm that make XF and such like but a family
run off shoot, as far as I can tell. It's got plummy spicy fruit and
tastes as good as any of the brands that sell for several Euro more.
Finally, you'd be hard pushed to find a better party fizz for a tenner
than their Sparkling Jura Chardonnay, €9.99,
85/100.
