No wine slot on the Dublin Life today (3/12/03) on News Talk 106 FM, as
it's budget day in Ireland and finance minister Charlie McReevey will be
delivering the bad news at about 3.30pm. Most commentators feel he will
raise excise duties and that means wine. It's enough to drive you to
drink. So rush out and buy the wine of the week before it increases in
price.
STOP PRESS- DUTIES
DIDN'T CHANGE SO RUSH OUT AND CELEBRATE
Fizz is criminally expensive in Ireland
with excise of €4.10 per bottle plus VAT at 21% on top of that and it
can only get worse, it seems, so buy now in time for Christmas.
Wine
Republic 2004, recently published, handed out awards for Champagne
and Sparkling wines of the year. In the Champagne category Bollinger
Special Cuvee NV, about €45 and Charles Heidseick Brut NV, Mise en Cave
1998, about €37 both scored 91/100 and were joint
winners.
Those on a tighter budget might check out the sparkling wine winner, Aldi's
Cremant de Jura at only €9.99, scoring 85/100. Remember,
€5.85 of that price goes to Charlie's department in VAT and
excise.
Of course Charlie may
decide to leave excise rates unchanged in which case you should buy some
fizz to celebrate with anyway.
