4 June 2003 |
Today (4/6/03) on the Dublin Life show on News Talk 106 FM, after the 3pm
news, Martin will be discussing Dublin wine merchant Searson's, who are
establishing something of a reputation of a finishing school for wine
nuts. Former employees have opened three shops in the last couple of
years: Wicklow Wine company;Grape Escape in Lucan and now former van man
Dougie has opened a shop in Skerries. Sorry don't know the name of the
shop yet.
Searson's had a tasting in Dublin this week and although their were many
stars a couple stood out that were new to me. First an amazing Italian
white, a Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2000 called Sanice
by Cesani, at €18.50, rating 90. (Lea & Sandeman in UK). It really deserves the moniker
'Poor man's Meursault' that the region's wines have as it's an absolute
ringer for fine Burgundy.
The red is more humble but delicious and shows what Southern France is
best at. Minervois, Ch. la Grave 2000,
'Expression', €9.99 rating 88 (UK agent unknown) has bags of character with
vibrant blackberry syrah fruit, white pepper, bacon and herbs or the
garrique as they say in that part of the world and only around a tenner.
