Did
you pile on the weight over Christmas? Don't worry, you can lose it all
and more and not give up our favourite drink. Martin will be discussing
how on News Talk 106FM’s Dublin Life show today (7/1/2004) after the 3pm news.
We
all know that the sensible thing to do is eat and drink less and exercise
more but frankly I find that just about impossible. Thankfully the much
talked about low - carbohydrate or Atkins diet is not about calories but
carbs and dry white and red wines are virtually carb free. The book of the
diet suggest no drinking during the first two weeks of the diet, but I
prefer another version of the diet by Dr Charles Clark called the New
High Protein Diet, which doesn't prohibit low carb alcohols like wine
and spirits. Does it work? Well I lost about 4lb in the 10 days before
Christmas and of course I put it all on again during the festivities but
at least I was back to square one, rather than even heavier as I usually
am at this time of year. I've just started it again and so we'll see how
it goes.
The
diet isn't easy to follow, at times I crave a spud or spaghetti and if you
feel like that too you might try the Hay or food combining diet. This
allows carbohydrates but not at the same meal as protein. It works too.
I've tried this in the past and lost 6 - 7lb over a couple of weeks. The
good thing here is that beer is a carbohydrate so you can have a beer with
your pasta and later some wine with your protein meal!
Wine
of the week is Springfield 'Life From Stone'
Sauvignon Blanc 2003, the Wine Republic 2004 White wine of the
Year. Available from Vaughn Johnson and others like Redmonds for around
€13 - 15. It no more slimming than any other wine but the crisp tangy
taste of a good sauvignon blanc feels like it should be slimming. In a
previous article I likened the variety to mdel Kate Moss. Click here
to see why.
