Today (8/10/03) on the Dublin Life show on News Talk 106 FM, after the 3pm
news, Martin will be talking about wine show awards and Mitchell's
portfolio tasting.
There
are more competitions than ever out there and a great many bottles have
little gold medal stickers on them. But beware, all that glitters is not
gold. Some medals are more important than others. And ones such as the one
seen recently saying ‘Gold medal style’ are utterly meaningless. Naturally
a wine wine of the year award from Wine Republic is an important and
reliable guide but others to look for include the London International challenge,
the IWSC awards, not to mention Wine Ireland's tasting results.
Martin
will also be talking about the Mitchell's tasting attended yesterday in
Dublin from, which the wines of the week are drawn. Sipp
Mack Pinot Blanc 2002, €11.95, 88/100 is the best vintage he
has ever says the winemaker. I wouldn’t know about that but it is lovely
with musky orange fruit and good length, making it much richer than
you’d expect for this grape variety. The red to partner it is D’Arada
Tinto 2000, €7.95, 86/100 and a real bargain with chunky
spicy fruit. It’s made from periquita, tricadeira and camarate in
Estramadura. I don't know if these have ever won medals but they certainly
each deserve a gold medal for value.
