The world cup kicked off on
Friday June 9th In Germany. Beer sales will soar but wine lovers have plentry of
reasons to raise a glass too. We looked at world cup wines in the Newstalk 106fm studio on the
Moncrieff show last Friday June 9th.
The focus is firmly on Germany who's fine wines have had a raw deal for
years now, unfairly tarnished by association with cheap nasty liebfaumilch. It
means that their glorious rieslings are under priced and they provide superb
summer drinking. On a hot day it's much healthier to be drinking wine at 9-12%
abv rather than some oaky 14.55 monster chardonnay.
"But
I don't like sweet wine" you protest. Don't worry they are a lot drier
these days. Marks and Spencer has some excellent wines. We tasted a Darting
Estate Dürkheimer Michelsberg Riesling Troken 2004 at only €10.50.
It was a delicously more-ish mix of apples, oranges and lemons. Troken means dry
and M & S rate it as 2 on their dryness scale, where 1 is dry and 8 is
sweet. Look out also for thier excellent Mineralstein Riesling at €9.99.
Dunnes
have a couple of bargain Germans on offer at the moment. We tasted Schmitt
Sohne Pinot Grigio 2004 priced at €5.99 reduced by €1. Ther's a
reisling at the same price too. It too was dry, very fruity and very glugable
and much more flavoursome than many of the widelyavailable bland Nothern Italian
Pinot Grigios at €8-11. By the way the PG grape can also be called
Grauburgunder, Rülander and Pinot Gris.
Many
people's fancy for the big cup is Argentina and fans of theirs are spoilt for
choice. I've been a fan of Dunne's Santa Isabel for a long time and their Santat
Isabel Malbec Reserve 2004 is available at €9.99. At 14% abv and
bags of flavour it's as full on and gutsy a red as Man Utd Argentine full back
Gabriel Heinze. Just the thing for a world cup barbie. Dunnes also have a
€5.99 Arggy special made, I noted from the small print, by the same compay.
Haven't tasted it, but surely worth checking.
