Cross Border Raid
- 9 September 2003 |
Today (9/9/03) on the Dublin Life show on News Talk 106 FM, after the 3pm
news, Martin will be talking about buying wine in Northern Ireland.
Essentially, the advice is to avoid the high street chains who offer
little more than big brands, although at lower prices than the South and
head for either the Supermarkets for the bargains or serious wine shops
like James Nicholson or Compendium.
The £2.99 (€4.49) wine is alive and
well in Belfast as I discovered at Sainsbury's Forestside store where I
picked up a Soave at just £2.79 83/100 which
was nutty and lightly fruity and a Chilean
Merlot for £2.99 83/100 reduced on promotion from £3.99 with
reasonable cherry an plum fruit.
Neither was a memorable wine but if you're having a party why not check
out the new motorway and the impressive bridge on the Drogheda bypass. I
drove from Phibsborough on Dublin's North side to Newry in about 65
minutes last Saturday and sometimes it takes longer to get to the South
Side of Dublin! There's a Sainsbury's but The Belfast store has a bigger
selection.
The other bargain is spirits. Following
the huge hike in price in the last budget it is now much cheaper to buy
your booze up North. A bottle of Gordon's Gin is about £11.20 (€16.80
as opposed to €20 - 21) and jameson's is just around £14 (€21 rather
than €25- 26).
