The 10th annual Superquinn French Wine Sale is on at the moment and Martin will be tasting some of the wines on offer with Sean Moncrieff on the afternoon show at about 3.20pm today (14th Oct 2005). The first couple of French wine sales all but had us queuing around the block for the deals on offer but an awful lot has happened in the last decade. French market share has fallen through the floor and cheap prices are no longer the source of amazement that they once were. So is it worth a visit? The answer is a resounding
yes. I’ve tasted my way through the entire offer and while there’s plenty
that should be avoided there’s also plenty to enjoy at very keen prices. The
likes of Aldi and Lidl may offer Chablis for under €10 or vin de pays d’Oc
for €6 on a year round basis but those wines nearly all taste like that’s
all that they are worth. The best of the Superquinn wines taste like they are
worth the headline price so represent a bargain at the sale price. We’ll be tasting three today: Vienot Chablis 2004 at €9.99 reduced from €11.99, Pellerin Fleurie 2004 at €9.89 down from €12.59 and finally La Combe des Oliviers Corbières 2003 at €8.69 from €9.99. All offer excellent value and are worth buying. Others worth buying include: Whites:
The last two named here are the stand out bargains of the entire sale for me. Reds:
There are several Bordeaux at €20+ and even though they are reduced in price by about 20% they don’t represent any kind of value. The Rhone wines, Lirac aside were not very interesting or very good value. All in all the whites are the most successful part of this offer.
