Wine of the Week

Martin talks about wine about once a month on Dublin radio station News Talk 106 FM on a Friday at about 3.40pm on the Moncrieff show. He usually tastes two wines and details will appear here. Previous wines of the week can be viewed in the archive.

You can listen live to News Talk 106 FM via their web page.

Punk in a Cardigan - 11th Nov. 2005

Marks and Spencer are the 2006 Wine Republic Supermarket Wine Retailer of the Year. Why? Oddly for a company with a staid reputation therir wines are very edgy. They don't have buyers but winemakers assembling their offering.

If there is a cutting edge breaking region, then their buyers are there getting an exclusive wine made for them. Hawkes Bay Syrah? They have one made by the superb Craggy Ranges outfit. Leyda - the most happening cool area in Chile. They have a couple of great wines at bargain prices. How about a varietal Graciano Rioja? I've never seen it sold by anyone else, as it's normally an anonymous part of a blend. And there are plenty more like that.

They challenge the rules. Mineralstein is a German riesling made by blending wines from the Mosel & Phalz. It has to be sold as a table wine, but that's what the Italians did when creating those Tuscan superstars that broke the rules annd set new standards. How about a rosé pinot grigio? They've fermented pinot grigio with corvino - radical or what?

Pricing also seems more sensible than ever. Thay have had more sales in the last 12 months than I can ever recall. Plenty of 20% discount offers and even 50% off an Austrian Grüner Veltliner this year.

We'll taste the aforementioned Mineralstein Riesling 2004 at €10.50, plus a Hungarian Pinot Grigio 2004 at €7.99 and a Casablanca Pinot Noir in studio that has been knocked down to only €6.39.

it seems they aare even trying to traine their staff. If you don't normally shop there gert on down and try something new. All the of fathfulls, the vinous equivalent of socks and knickers are there so you can play safe too and just buy their fabulous Chablis.
