Joyce's Choice For Bloomsday
19th May 2004 |
The 100th
Bloomsday will soon be upon on
June 16th and a pair of souvenir Swiss wines have been released to mark
the occasion. Martin investigates and discuses the wines on the Dublin
Life show on News Talk 106FM after the 3pm news on Wed 19th May 2004.
Joyce lived in Zurich for several periods of his life where he wrote much
of Ulysses and finished writing Finnegan’s Wake before he died and was
buried there in 1941.
In Finnegan’s Wake
which he declared his favourite wine to be Fendant de Sion and so lovers
of his books now have a chance to taste a similar wine to the one that
gave him so much pleasure. Fendant de Sion is obscure as,well Jude
perhaps, to most of us but there wasn’t much Aussie chardonnay around in
those days and it would have been a local tipple.
Cuvée James Joyce Fendant de Sion 2003 is
produced by Provins Valais in the Swiss end of the Rhone valley and
is a fruity easygoing number and fairly priced at €10.95. There’s a
red partner, another Valais wine called Dôle de Sion which is a
fruity light pinot noir / gamay blend at the same price. I don’t think
he records his love for this style of wine but perhaps someone should
produce a ‘Joyce’ red Burgundy as he wrote of enjoying a glass of
Burgundy and Gorgonzola in Davy Byrne’s pub.
