I won't be able to get to News Talk 106FM's studios today (20/8/03) to
deliver my usual wine of the week spot but here it is anyway.
I'm busy tasting my way through boxes of
samples for the forthcoming Wine Republic 2004 (it's a dirty job and all
that) and yesterday tried some of Dunnes offerings. Their Spanish range is
particularly impressive. Spain has been a source of vibrant modern wines
made mainly from tempranillo or garnacha (grenache) for a few years now
and no Irish retailer has their finger more firmly on the pulse than
Dunnes. M
& S are pretty hot in this area too.
There are many that I could recommend but
the one that caught the eye was Agramont Navarro
Old Vines Garnacha 2001, €7.99, 86/100. Remarkably the vines
in question are a century old but they deliver delicious berry fruit with
a twist of black pepper. The whole thing is even better and more mellow
once the air had gotten at it for an hour or so. A real bargain. I didn't
know the price as I was tasting and guessed around €10 - 11.
