Get Fizzical This New Year's Eve -
30th Dec. 2005 |
Tomorrow night is New
Year’s Eve so it’s likely that more Champagne and sparkling wine will be
opened than on any other night of the year, so we’re tasting a range of
sparkling wines and a Champagne today (30-12-05) on the afternoon show on
Newstalk 106FM.
First is a Cava, from Spain, Clos
Monistrol, bought for just £3.99 in Sainsburys in Newry. Duty on fizz is
lower in the UK so savings can be substantial especially if there’s some kind
of special offer, which there usually is at this time of year They also have a
Champagne for £9.99 on off that is made by Lanson, it says in the small print
on the label.
Second wine is the widely
available Jacob’s Creek Rosé, usually 12.95,but on offer in Tesco at
€10.95 or on offer at £5.99 in Sainsburys. It may be a big brand so you might
expect bland but you’d be wrong as this offers excellent value and is in fact
the Wine Republic 2006 sparkling wine of the year.
Last is a Champagne from
Marks and Spencer called Desroches & Cie at €22.50, reduced from £31.00.
Many
of the supermarkets in Ireland have good own label champagnes, as can be seen in
the reviews in the current issue of Wine Ireland. Usually reliable are Tesco for
their 1er cru an blanc de noir and Dunnes new range, Superquinn and even Aldi
who have a specialist in the region advising them on their wine buying.
