Aldi Tasting, September 2nd 2003
Aldi held their press spring tasting in Dublin today and after last year's tasting it wasn't a surprise to discover that standards were really quite high. Wines are listed in no particular order apart from being divided by colour.

 Dry Whites
Myrah Estates Chardonnay NV, Australia
Tropical fruit with attractive creamy buttery flavours too.
€6.99 85
Badger’s Creek Semillon Chardonnay 2002, Australia
Perhaps it was a rogue bottle as the combination red was better but this was a bit earthy and that hid the limey fruit.
€5.99 81
Mondiale Sauvignon Blanc NV, Australia
Very crunchy green pepper and cat’s pee style that I find a bit coarse but many like.
€7.99 83
Mondiale Sauvignon Blanc 2003, S. Africa
An almost identical label to the Aussie Mondiale, so look carefully as for me this is much better with smart gooseberry and lemon fruit.
€7.99 87
Hacienda San Jose Sauvignon Blanc 2002, Argentina
Not usually a top performer in Argentina but this works well with light tropical fruit and lemon peel crispness.
€7.99 86
Château  Lardeau 2002 Bergerac (screw-cap) France
Very French, grassy, lemon and mineral style.
€7.99 85
Montey Graves Blanc 2001(screw-cap), France
Partial oak ageing has added a little boday and nut to some very attractive orange and peach fruit on this great value wine.
€7.99 87
Le Mazet Sauvignon Blanc 2002, VdP d’Oc, France
Good if a little light passion fruit and lime fruit that is much livelier than most sauvignon from this part of the world.
€7.99 85
Enoteca Italiana Gambellara 2002
very sub chardonnay like light nut and fruit. If you’re having a party why look further.
€4.99 84
Chablis la Larme 2002, France
Nothing wrong here as, despite the very low price it tastes like Chablis with crisp mineral character and nut. I’ve had much dirtier cheap Chablis.
€9.99 87
Medocino Organic Chardonnay, California
Mid weight with attractive crisp buttery fruit.
€? 85
Sweet White
Niersteiner Gutes Domtal Spatlese 2001 QmP
This is probably as nice as sweet wine for a fiver gets as it was a great vintage and there’s riesling in the blend.
€4.99 83
St Amandus Beerenauslese 2002, QmP, Pfalz, 50cl
Mainly Ortega and Optima and quite attractive, luscious sweet orange fruit.
€7.99 86
Sparkling
Moscato Spumante,
Only 7% a.b.v and sweet but very attractive in the right circumstances with its grapey sweet orangey fruit. Try it with plum pudding on Xmas day,
€7.99 85
Phillippe Michael Cremant de Jura 2000, France
100% chardonnay and perfectly pleasant crisp lightly fruit sparkling wine. Superb value
€9.99 85
Champagne Carlin 1er cru, France
Damn fine cherry pie” as they used to say in Twin Peaks with its cherry fruit and dough or pastry like aromas. A touch too much sweetness though  for my liking.
€19.99   85
Red
Myrah Estates Cabenet Shiraz NV, Australia
Pretty simple currant friuit with a bitter nutty character that I’m guessing is from oak chips or planks.
€6.99 80
Badger’s Creek Shiraz Cabernet 2002, Australia
Good lightly spicy berry fruit wine that compares well with most of the branded wines at higher prices.
€5.99 84
Ransomes Vale Shiraz – Petit Verdot NV Australia
Good to see the PV grape emerging from the shadows. It adds some backbone and liquorice spice to this great value blend.
€7.99 87
Chateau Selection Claret 2001 (screw-cap), France
A great success for a entry level claret. With plumy fruit and a d a lightly spicy tobacco edge this is a match for most better known brands at higher piece.
€5.99 86
Sangiovese di Puglia 2002, Italy
I hated this, which is rare, even though I don’t think it was off or faulty.
€4.99 55
Chemin du Papes Côtes du Rhône 2001
Inoffensive and undemanding berry and light herbal wine.
€6.99 83
Hacienda San Jose Malbec 2002, Argentina
Gutsy berry and lightly spicy wine that many will like.
€7.99 86
Le Brasset Grenache Syrah 2001, VdP d’Oc, France
Quite tannic firm wine that lacks a little fruit and who buys wine from Aldi to age it.
€7.99 84
Ile de Forge Merlot, VdP d’Oc, France
Good weight of prune and raisin fruit that sadly wont be around for long I believe, but the syrahreplaces it.
€9.99 86
Ile de Forge Syrah, VdP d’Oc, France
Coming soon to replace the good merlot and this is even better with rich modern bright fruit and vanilla oak and good length.
€9.99 88
Château Bessan 2001 Médoc, France
Quite smart Bordeaux with real medoc pencil lead character.
€7.99 86
S de Siran Margaux 2000
You wouldn’t unusually go to Aldi for a smart Bordeaux red but this could change a few minds as it’s the second label of good Margaux property Ch. Siran in a good year and it has bags of ripe currant and cherry fruit, oak and good length.
€14.99 88
Château Petit Faurie de Soutard 1997
Two bottles opened and the second was better with a lt of prune ad raisin fruit plus coffee notes and a touch of leather as this mellows and the texture gets silky.
€14.99 87
Evolution Old Vine Shiraz, Australia
A really intense fruity dark wine that’s great value.
€7.99 87
Mendocino Organic Cabernet, California
Good currant and cherry fruit.
€? 86
