Huet Vouvray
Irish Agents Wine Knows and Noel Pinguet of Domaine Huet recently hosted a dinner and tasting in Dublin to showcase their wines. This top estate's wines can last for decades, as the evening showed. Only those wines definitely stocked in Ireland are marked with prices, but it may be possible to get the others too. Contact Liam Cabot for details on Wine Knows on 01-235-1690. UK agents are Richards Walford & Co Ltd, +44 (0)1780 460451.
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 2001
Pear and apple nose leads to a very youthful, austere palate with plenty of mineral character and good length. It will fatten in time and its current style means that it’s not one for novices.
€22.99 88
Huet Vouvray Le Clos de Bourg Demi-sec 2001
Pear apple and marzipan on the nose whilst the beautiful off dry palate shoes honey, flinty mineral and cream and good length.
 €u/n 88
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2000
A little yeast and cooked apple on the nose suggests some re-fermentation in bottle but owner Noel Pinguet doesn’t seem fussed by it and perhaps it’s because the other flavours on the palate are so attractive with candied citrus peel and apricot and pear. Leave it alone for a few years and I expect the best elements will win out.

Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1997
Thought it was faulty at first but gradually it cleared as the very nutty flavour lightened up and revealed some citrus and honey too.
 €u/n 87?
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Moelleux 1er Trie 1993
Quite developed flavours with golden syrup and toffee rather than honeyed citrus fruit. Good length.
 €u/n 89
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec 1988
A real beauty at its peak now for me with classic wet wool nose and honey and citrus with a touch of fudge suggesting maturity. Palate is off dry but well balanced and has fascinating mineral character.
 €36.00 92
Huet Vouvray Le Clos de Bourg Moelleux 1er Trie 1971
A cracker that has aged beautifully with honey and orange barley, rich sweet fruit, mineral tones and good length. Still fresh enough to suggest years of life.
 €100.00 93
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Demi-Sec 1971
A little earthy mushroom character on the nose but the fruit is there on the plate with apricot and orange and some toffee too. How long it will keep depends on how you like your wines. But I’d drink up.
 €u/n 89
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 1969
Tasting mature now and showing a few too many wrinkles with mushroom and toffee on the nose but attractive rich honey fruit on the palate with a fresh finish. Some will love it though.
 €u/n 88
Huet Vouvray Le Haut Moelleux 1er Trie 1959
A famous vintage that has aged beautifully showing honey, apricot, lemon, nut and butterscotch and great length.
 €175.00 94
Sparkling
Huet Vouvray Mousseux Brut 1998
Lovely wine with slightly lower than standard pressure showing honey, lemon and nut with medium length.
 €24.99 86
Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut NV
About half the standard pressure means this is light but refreshing and easy to drink with nut cream and apple flavours.
 €u/n 87
