Tasting of Selection of O'Briens Wines August 2003
I'm researching the next edition of my annual guide Wine Republic and have recently tasted a selection of O'Briens' wines. There are more to come too which will be added as soon asthety are available. There are also tasting notes on Torbreck, which is an O'Briens exclusive in the Aussie review section.
Australia
Clarendon Hills Old Vine Grenache
A famous and highly regarded estate that charges accordingly for a wine that’s good but can’t justify that price tag. It has good intensity, rich mulberry fruit with white pepper and liquorice and supple tannins.

€69.99 90
Henscke ‘Julius’ Dry Riesling 2001, Eden Valley
Zesty lime fruit with chalky mineral flavours and a hefty price tag.

€23.99 88
Henscke ‘Tilly’s Vineyard 2001, Barossa
An oaked white blend with orange, melon and nut flavours that for me is a little clumsy and doesn’t quite gel and not at this price.

€15.99 84
Chile
Villard Sauvignon Blanc 2002, Casablanca
Once again Casablanca proves its worth as a great place to grow grapes as this has a distinctive mineral as well as gooseberry like varietal character.

€10.49 87
Villard Pinot Noir 1999, Casablanca
Almost a parody of pinot noir with a cherry liqueur like style. . This one doesn’t quite work for me, especially at this price.

€16.49 84
Los Vascos Grande Reserve 2000
100% cabernet and oddly not labeled as such, but that’s the French for you as Lafite Rothschild are behind this ripe but elegant blackcurrant, liquorice and cedar scented wine.

€16.99 87
France
Albert Morot Beaune 1ere Cru 2000
Soft berry fruit with a delicious more-ish silky texture.

€35.00 89
Ch Vincent Pouilly Fuissé ‘Le Clos’ 2001
A pretty rich wine which oak use makes even richer.

€29.99 88
Ch. Laville Bertrou Minervois-la-Livinière 2000
C
haracterful herbal and spice notes add to the underlying berry fruit.

€11.49 87
Domaine de Saint Romble Sancerre 2000
Quite smart flinty mineral aromas plus blackcurrant leaf, gooseberries and cream with good length.

€17.99 89
Domaine du Clos Godeaux Chinon Rosé 2002
A particularly good rosé redolent of summer fruits and as fresh as a daisy.

€9.99 87
Domaine du Langois-Chateau Saumur 2001, Vielles Vignes
Unusually in my experience there’s a little oak use that adds weight to a classy chenin based wine with typical honey and lemon flavours with good length.

€10.49 88
Fournier Sauvignon Blanc 2002, VdP de Jardin de France
raw gooseberry with an earthy mineral edge. Not bad.

€8.99 85
Le Demi Boeuff Muscadet Cote de Granf Lieu sur lie 2002
Gosh a half decent Muscadet, now there’s a pleasant change.

€9.99 85
M.J Vincent Morgon ‘Charmes’2001
Ripe cherry and raspberry with pretty good length.

€14.99 87
Italy
Ca de Pipa Valpolicella Ripasso 1999
Turbo charged Valpolicella offering up violet perfume, raisins, cherry and plums that had me sniffing away for ages before enjoying the ripe cherry, herbal, prune and tea flavoured palate.

€16.99 90
Montresor Soave Classico 2002
Okay, so it’s a Soave but you won’t bore your friends to death with this one a it’s a bit fruitier and richer than usual.

€8.99 86
Poggio Calvelli Orvieto Classico 2002
A nice surprise, as where you expect bland you find orangey fruit and nut allied to good length.

€? 86
Spain
Borsao Tres Pios Campo de Borja 2001 Garnacha
A thumper of a wine and the bottle weighs a ton too. Very rich, seductive, hedonistic prune, plum and violet scented wine with long silky palate.

€16.99? 90
