Tenta dell'Ornellaia Tasting August 2003
Importer Woodford Bourne (01-404-7300) hosted a tasting of Marchese Lodovico Antinori's Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia wines at Dublin's Ely Wine Bar. The wines are famously expensive and traded at auction but are they any good. Well, yes and no. For the full story see my Free Run diary. UK agent is John Armit I think.

Poggio Alle Gazze 2001
Last vintage of Ornellaia’s sauvignon blanc and with no more to offer than a little herbaceous character, some melon fruit and an outrageous price I can see why.

€23-24.00 86
Le Volte, 2001
Herbal and coffee notes on the nose with prune too but he palate is firm and sour to the point of astringency. Maybe time will tame it.

€18-19.00 83
Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia 1999
Inviting black olive, blackcurrant and cherry nose lead to a rich palate to which tannins add weigh and length.

€40.00 91
Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia 2000
Perfumed nose with violets and ripe cherry – almost Margaux like.  Palate is rich with ripe tannins and cherry, hers and cedar spice and good length.

€40.00 89
Ornellaia 1999
Tight nose showing a little prune and spice but palate is a cracker with rich plum, prune and tar surrounded but firm but ripe tannins that give great length and focus. Drink 2006 – 2020.

€110 – 115.00 93
Ornellaia 2000
Hedonistic and seductive wine oozing blackcurrant, cherry, herbs and spice with the kind of silky rich long palate that puts one in mind of great Pomerol or Burgundy. Drink now 2015.

€110 – 115.00 95
Masseto
How to rate this wine? It’s intense to the point of being painful with raisin and chocolate fruit but the alcohol burns and that makes it seem clumsy and unbalanced to me but maybe not you. Perhaps time will mellow it. Drink 2006 - 2020
€170.00 88
